Aloha and Good Morning!

Welcome to another monthly Savant Online Realtime Text Chat. Hope you USA East Coasters aren't inundated to much with wind and rain to join in. Here in "sunny" Honolulu, the sun has yet to rise over Diamond Head, and even the mynah birds are still asleep instead of squawking their heads off for the impending sunrise.

It's been quite a month with lots to talk about, so, let's get started!

Sincerely,
Dan

A WHALE'S TALE by Daniel S. Janik - Excerpt #1 (Family Rated)

“Chapter 1 - Twenty Feet Under
The tropical sky blushed every imaginable color of blue. Gentle waves reached up to the sky like a playful pack of ponies running towards land, their silvery manes fluttering in the gentle trade winds. Brilliant sunlight splashed down from the sky as if on a golden waterfall happily emptying into a bright blue sea.
Sorry, little one, I don’t know if it was a school day or the weekend because, well, every day in Hawaii is paradise. But this was not just any day, because, you see, I had just finished my afternoon nap, and opened my eyes twenty feet under water.
Twenty feet under water! But that's impossible, you say...”

With those words begins the adventures of a juvenile humpback whale on his life journey from Hawaii to Alaska. Written by Naturalist Daniel S. Janik for adults to read aloud to their children, and youth up to 16 years of age to read and enjoy, this 92 page,  8.25" x 5" softcover book was written to foster children's curiosity and discovery.  Filled with novel points of view of our world, the book includes 20 B&W "Color-Me-Please" illustrations by noted Oklahoma artist Ruth Janik.

A WHALE'S TALE by Daniel S. Janik / Illustrated by Ruth Janik

Greetings my friends of Savant Books.

I am Leon Puissegur and I am about to have my book published here at Savant Books. It is not my first book, but it will be the best due to the edit performed by the Honorable Daniel Janik.

My book is about a man named John Marx and his action/adventure which begins on an oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. He finds an object that is very unusual along with an e-mail from an old friend. Little does he know what this small package is going to bring to him, his family, and friends. He will undergo chases on land along with his family being chased through the marshes and Bayous of St. Bernard Parish in Louisiana, then he gets into gun fioghts and finds the individual who dropped the package and discovers ideas he never knew existed. Near the end he faces a battle with power players and that part will have to be read to find out how it turns out.

As I said, it's been a busy and eventful month. Not only has Savant Books and Publications restarted it's Honolulu author/book/award parties, this time at Clubhouse Makino (old Hard Rock Cafe) located next to Waikiki and the Convention Center, but I got to do the second of our two Author Award Parties.

The first was for Zachary Oliver's FALLING BUT FULFILLED: REFLECTIONS ON MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES (Savant 2011), and was a great success (see the "Publisher's Blog" on the Savant website at:

http://www.savantbooksandpublications.com/publisherblog.php

for photos). FALLING BUT FULFILLED was publicly awarded a Neurobiological Learning Society Choice Award!  Way to go Zach!

Last week, it was my turn, to publicly acknowledge A WHALE'S TALE, having received a Hollywood Book Festival Award for Children's Books. Way to go, Dan. Here's some photo to enjoy -

Our next scheduled event will be a "Poetry Fest" on 4 September from 3 to 6 p.m. honoring the release of our latest yearly anthology WAVELENGTHS - 2011 SAVANT ANTHOLOGY OF POEMS.  I hope everyone will come.

Sincerely,
Daniel S. Janik

Aloha Leon and Jean,

Leon, it is my pleasure to be the editor for your upcoming adventure/thriller, THE OIL MAN. I love working with engaged authors like yourself. Where did the idea for THE OIL MAN come from?

Jean, greetings from almost sunshiny Honolulu (sun's just rising over Diamond Head and the mynah birds are doing their chant to the rising sun - squawk, squawk, squawk - guess they have their own realtime chat going on)!  Speaking of consummate authors, I'm excited about your newest work which is now in final book proofing.  Can you tell everyone more about COMMUNION?

Sincerely,
Daniel S. Janik

Thanks,

i am sure it will be a good experience.  I have to sign out briefly, this site takes longer to downlaod then my old dial up or so it seems.  I am going to another engine to see if I can get this going a bit faster.

I highly recommend Zachary Oliver's FALLING BUT FULFILLED.  It should be required reading for all teachers; definitely a primer for educators seeking reform.  A thought provoking memoir for everyone.

Speaking of Whales,

I've had the pleasure of seeing the number of whales for my "Ocean of Whales" Project increase dramatically as a result of the Award Show at Clubhouse Makino last weekend. Here's a photo of another addition to the Whale Pod. When I collect 1,000 of them, they will begin migrating as a group all over the world for display to help encourage ocean awareness.  I like to link each of my published works with a public service effort of some kind. A WHALE'S TALE (Savant 2008) fans who want to participate need only go to my author website at

http://janik.yolasite.com/childrens-books.php

download one of the three whale pictures, color the whale as wildly as you wish, and mail it back to me. Additionally, I encourage readers to take a photo of themselves holding the book in front of a national landmark and email it to me for posting on my author blog at

I am back, I mhave what is "called" high speed, the connection is faster then dial up, but it is not the 58 megabites one really gets with a real high speed.  My area was supposed to get the real high speed almost a year ago, but the Senator redirecter the money some where else.  I get disgusted with the way it works at times because it is not as fast as I would like it to be.  But I am back on to view what is going on and chantr.

Aloha Jean,

I agree. Dr. Zachary Oliver's FALLING BUT FULFILLED (Savant 2011) receive a great cover endorsement from the Father of Multiple Intelligence Theory, Dr. Howard Gardner.

But tell me about your soon-to-be-release book, COMMUNION. It's got a great cover (the book proofreader already commented on it) by Savant Cover Artist Christy Ussher of WHO'S KILLING ALL THE LAWYERS? (Savant 2011) fame.

Daniel S. Janik

So, Leon,

I'm curious - from where did the idea for THE OIL MAN come?  Who's the protagonist? Could you give us a brief description? As the editor for the book, I can say it's in the vein of Brian Morley's NUMBER ONE BESTELLER (Savant 2011),  Mike Farris' two books, MANIFEST INTENT (Savant 2011) and KANAKA BLUES (Savant 2010), and Bentley Gates formidable THE BAHRAIN CONSPIRACY (Savant 2010), all of which I've had the privilege of editing. I'm pleased to say that each of these action-adventure-thrillers not only lives up to it's name, but affords readers with a unique twist and a new way of looking at the world. Those are signatures of Savant books.

What is the twist to THE OIL MAN, Leon?

In my mind, the "new way of looking at the world" not only involves some wildly new technology, but a look at oil and its production theory that will blow readers away.

Sincerely,
Daniel S. Janik

Dr. Janik,

Have you had an opportunity to go out and either see the whales or swim with them?  I ask this because while on a cruise, I scuba dove out of St. Marten and was swimming with a couple of Sea Turtles, we were told not to hang on because they could have pulled us away from our dive area and that would have created a problem.  It was some nice to dive down and swim with all the colorfull fish and other creatures of the Caribbean.

Dan, Thanks.  COMMUNION has a great cover, front and back, thanks to Christie Ussher and Jonathan Marcantoni's vision.  I'd like to comment on the  experience of collaborating on this book.  COMMUNION demanded some hard choices and priorities from a father - duty, honor, country - and the essential nature of a mother - the protection of family at all costs - which we were both (a father and a mother) able to bring to this story.  This story, these two writers, a wonderful editor (Zach Oliver) and an understanding publisher (Dan) fell into alignment to present what we think is a classic, hopefully coming to a bookstore and a theatre near you in the near future.

Excerpt # 2:

COMMUNION by Jean Blasiar and Jonathan Marcantoni – Excerpt #2 (Family Rated)

“Chapter 3 – The Commission

Quite by accident, Melanie’s fellow workers became aware of her artistic talent.  One year after Melanie started working at the factory, at lunch where all the employees came together, the workers were encouraging everyone to enter the contest to see who could come up with a caricature for the first fully assembled military plane to come off the line.

As a lark, Melanie entered the contest with a larger than life caricature of the famous photograph of Betty Grable, sassily posing with her gorgeous legs in a white bathing suit, hands on hips looking over her shoulder.”

Melanie’s picture would catapult the young mother into a position of both fame and notoriety which would change her life and that of her daughter, Gem’s, forever.

Two authors, Jean Blasiar and Jonathan Marcantoni, tell the story of a little girl, Gem, who despite the ongoing horrors of war, is so devoted to her missing father that she sets out to do what no one else has accomplished.  Find him.

“What drew me from the first to Jon’s story was its simple power.  On the surface it’s a gut-wrenching, very human story, but beneath that it hides deeper truths about life and love, and what we’re willing to sacrifice to find happiness.” – Jean Blasiar, author of POOR RICH (Savant 2010) and RICHER (Savant 2011).

“COMMUNION is so infectious, it buries itself under your skin and can’t be shaken.” – Jonathan Marcantoni.

COMMUNION by Jean Blasiar and Jonathan Marcantoni.

280 pp. – 5.25” x 8” Softcover Novel
