THE TURTLE DANCES by Daniel S. Janik- Excerpt #2 (Family Rated)

"Chapter 3 - Home

Isla was a natural surfer, having not just one, but two permanent surfboards—one above and another below her body. The top board was a shiny green and brown that, from above, made her look like an ocean rock, hiding her from the preying eyes of ravenous seabirds and killer whales. Her lower board, viewed from below, was a creamy sunshine white. Against a bright ocean sky, it made her near-invisible to any sharks or killer whales swimming below... Suddenly she felt the water surge beneath her, and settled inside the crest of the wave, steadying herself using her four flippers and tail for balance and position. Riding the wave, she lifted her head out of the water and smiled with pride. "

Mulit-award-winning author and USA Dancesport Competitor Daniel S. Janik is a former resident of Alaska currently residing in Honolulu, Hawaii, with his wife and competition dance partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya. Together they welcome the Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles to Hawaii throughout the year.

"I've long been fascinated by children's reactions to sea turtles—they seem to instinctively identify with them, viewing them without fear, even wading in and swimming bravely alongside them...This book came to me imagining what a sea turtle might think of the fearless, curious, shell-less, upright land-dwellers wading among them. Mightn't a particularly observant and fanciful turtle take things a step further if she clambered onto a beach and happened to see two humans dancing?" says Dan. "Naturalists at heart, the illustrator and I endeavored to keep the appearance and life history of our heroine, Isla, and her turtle-friend, Surf, reasonably true to life."

A WHALE'S TALE by Daniel S. Janik - Excerpt #2 (Family Rated)

[10298558-newest-book]

“Chapter 2 - The Big Top

I think being born must be quite different for whales than people. You see, when we whales are born, we simply leave the small sea inside our mother for a bigger one on the outside. We don't cry, because, for us, it’s a change we eagerly look forward to, just as you might look forward to going for a walk in a new park, or shopping at a new toy store. On the other hand, there is one really big challenge for us; that’s when we move from the small sea inside our mother to the bigger sea surrounding her. Just like you, from the moment we are born we must breathe air, and, unlike most other sea animals who get their air right from the water, we whales, like you, cannot. For us, you see, breathing is not so easy.

The hero of my story, a newborn whale, saw the water outside of his mother for the first time one early day in the human month of December. He was excited, and as you might imagine, a little frightened. This whale, like all newborn whales, held his breath, one, two, three, four... eight, nine, ten minutes, while his mother swam supportively beside him, singing, and encouraging him to take his first breath, slowly nudging him up towards the very top of the sea.

No, dear reader, our first breath isn't easy…”

HOLLYWOOD BOOK FESTIVAL AWARD

I wrote this book out of love for the gentle creatures that return every year from Alaska to Hawaii.  In the warm tropical waters, they have their babies and train them for the rigors of Alaska, presenting wonderful displays for patient whale-watchers - what we call in Hawaii “local TV.”  A WHALE’S TALE (Savant 2009) is the result of five years of whale observation.  As I write this, the whales are jumping not far from me, showing backs, tails, flukes and otherwise learning the life skills they will use when they return to their feeding grounds in the cold arctic.

Yes, I think a published non-fiction work should have both theoretic and applied aspects to it in order to be most useful. I would say that IN SEARCH OF SOMATIC THERAPY (Savant 2017) is probably about half and half. I go into quite a bit of detail about dance, especially Dancesport as it is emerging today, in order to relate its elements to somatic therapy. One way of looking at dance is as a form of somatic therapy, and one aspect of this is that it doesn't require a psychological therapist to heal oneself! Another singular aspect is that somatic therapy, like dance, is largely independent of language, hence is universally applicable worldwide.

By the way, would be grateful to readers who purchase my book through Amazon to add a review. The work is so new yet, that it awaits some reviews.

IN SEARCH OF SOMATIC THERAPY by Setsuko Tsuchiya - Excerpt #3 (This Excerpt is Family Rated)

[12625245-setsuko-tsuchiyas-in-search-of-somatic-therapy-savant-2017]

"Somatic therapists, beginning with Wihelm Reich, would… include DMT[Dance Movement Therapy] and, massage therapy Rolfing acupressure, acupuncture and Reiki, which have basic, fundamental tools, techniques, approaches and resources. The big question is exactly what they have in common that would further define somatic therapy per se…As such, all…can be expected to have basic, fundamental 'movements' in common that are  part of somatic therapy's tools, techniques, approaches and resources that further uniquely define it."

-----

About this Book:

IN SEARCH OF SOMATIC THERAPY (Savant 2017) encapsulates the basic fundamental elements underlying dance, eurhymy and the laying on of hands—what I like to call “somatic therapy.” By that, I mean what can happen when humans come into contact with other living things. But it’s more than the somatic experience. It’s about the power to not just heal, but prevent illness and disease in a manner that’s both ancient and new.

It is my hope that readers will come away with a new perspective on the power of touch and the universal body language that it creates. In today’s world of specialization, I think of somatic therapy as a unifying discipline in which everyone can participate, enjoy and receive benefit. Young or old, active or infirm, irrespective of language and culture, bodies share a group of fundamental characteristics, and these ultimately define somatic therapy.

Somatic therapy, as I envision it, is the consequence of Dr. Wilhelm Reich’s earliest investigations into healing the mind by healing the body, rather than attempting, as his mentor and colleague, Dr. Sigmund Freud did, to heal the body by healing the mind.

I hope you will enjoy journeying with me back in time and forward into the future IN SEARCH OF SOMATIC THERAPY.

-----

About the Author:

As an amateur DanceSport (ballroom/Latin dance) athlete and competitor as well as a medical massage therapist, I often felt a deep but unspoken connection between the two. During my university studies, I had the opportunity to further explore this connection. Thus began my search for somatic therapy.

At first, I thought that what dance and massage had in common was Dance Movement Therapy (DMT), a recognized form of psychological therapy. But being Japanese, I wanted something that was less language dependent and more body-based. I ultimately wanted to share what I discovered not only with English-speaking people, but Japanese speakers as well. It was this unique combination of wants that led me slowly away from DMT towards somatic therapy with the emphasis on the somatic or body rather than traditional psychological talk therapy.

I never thought of myself as an author; however, I found myself writing everything down, and eventually decided to organize and record it all in the form of a master’s thesis. That quickly led to my wanting to share what I’d discovered with a broader audience. I was so pleased when Savant Books and Publications agreed to publish my work.

In the future, I hope to travel, sharing what I’ve learned IN SEARCH OF SOMATIC THERAPY (Savant 2017).

Thanks for chatting today, Setsuko, and for the three excerpts about IN SEARCH OF SOMATIC THERAPY (Savant 2017). Hopefully, a large number of people will become aware of your outstanding, fundamental work on somatic therapy and it's importance in today's world. I want to mention before you leave, that I especially appreciated the chapters on healing from trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder using somatic therapy. I can't think of a bigger issue in today's world than healing from violence and violation.

THE TURTLE DANCES by Daniel S. Janik - Excerpt #3 (Family Rated)

"Chapter 13 - The Turtle Dances

"You know what?" The young man offered, thinking of the two turtles they'd been watching. “We danced so well together, I think we might just win!"

"You know, I think so, too,“ replied his partner. “Thanks to our turtle-friends out there," the two finished together.

The couple returned, hand-in-hand, to the dance floor to join the line of competitors. Waiting for the judges to announce the awards, the young man turned to his now self-assured partner, touched the tip of her hand softly much the way the turtles had, and smiled. "The turtle dances," he said softly.

"Yes," she replied, while unseen in the distance, Isla and Surf happily executed a perfect bounce, twirl and slide. "The turtle dances!"

Continuing the unique tradition of "talking up" rather than down to readers, THE TURTLE DANCES demonstrates the power and beauty of narrative storytelling at its finest. Designed to re-awaken curiosity, discovery in both children and adults, the book is an excellent way to introduce literacy and associated lifelong learning pleasures.

Mulit-award-winning author, naturalist, artist, photographer and movie producer Daniel S. Janik resides in Honolulu, Hawaii with his wife and dance partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya. Together they welcome Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles to Hawaii throughout the year. An Oklahoma painter known for her vivid, almost photographic renditions of nature, illustrator Ruth R. Janik created the 28 naturalistic line drawings in the book specifically for children to color.

THE TURTLE DANCES is the third in the Savant "Color-Me-Please" series and the third in the author's "Pacific Rim Naturalist" group of children's books.

CLEOPATRA UNCONQUERED by Helen R. Davis - Excerpt #3 (This Excerpt is Family Rated)

[12607043-cleopatra-unconquered-by-helen-davis]

"Back in my tent, my thoughts turned to my meeting with Caesar when I was a teenager. What did I really know of the ambitious Roman Consul, and, moreover, of the man? I would need to learn more about the man if I were to attempt to bring him to my side, and this I must clearly do. I knew he was a womanizer. This didn't overly concern me; what man was ever faithful? But it could prove helpful. Still, in the end, it was his conquests—the way he acted—publicly and personally—that were of greatest interest to me, and from what I could already tell, he was the right man to help me regain my throne, if I could but win his attention. My discussion with Azor that evening confirmed my suspicions. Caesar would not only be a formidable ally, but, if I could accomplish it, an interesting champion. I dispatched Mardian to Egypt to meet secretly with Olympos and learn more about the situation in Egypt and everything he could about Caesar's purpose now that Pompey was dead."

About this Book:

What if Cleopatra and Antony had triumphed at Actium over Octavian, the first Emperor of Rome? Would our world have been changed? What would the Middle East, Europe, and, by extension, the rest of the world, look like if the course of Western history was determined not by Rome but by Egypt?

CLEOPATRA UNCONQUERED (Savant 2015), the first of three novels in a series, imagines this scenario. Cleopatra, historically the last queen of Egypt, becomes instead the mother of an Egypto-Roman empire, the greatest the world has ever known. Cleopatra, her family, and those dear to her, as well as those not so dear to her, come to life in this richly imagined  alternate history.

Follow Cleopatra's privileged yet troubled childhood as the third daughter of Pharaoh Auletes, a weak-willed man despised by his subjects, other children, and even his wife. Be there as Cleopatra, his favored child and the only one loyal to him, learns at his feet—and from his errors. Determined to keep her nation alive and her people free, Cleopatra, although of Macedonian Greek heritage, develops a deep bond with the native people of Egypt. Meet Julius Caesar, Pompey, Cicero and his son, Cicero Minor, Marc Antony, and the ambitious but despicable Octavian as well as his wife, Livia, who will stop at nothing to destroy Cleopatra and Egypt.

Open the cover and immerse yourself immediately in ancient Egypt through Cleopatra's eyes as you read her personal memoirs, the ones archeologists have yet to discover!

About the Author:

Author Helen Davis has been writing since the age of twenty. An interest in strong women protagonists led her to write and publish EVITA: MY LIFE (Booksurge, 2009), an historical novel about the legendary Evita Peron. Intrigued by the legend of Cleopatra since she was in high school, as EVITA was released, Davis took up pen and began work on another historical novel surrounding this queen who sought to control nations in an era in which women had little power. A polyglot herself, the author, in the course of writing the manuscript, developed a strong personal attraction to this legendary queen, whose only crime, like many other women in history, was to be on the wrong side of history books. While writing the novel, Davis began to wonder how the world might be if Cleopatra and Antony had triumphed at the Battle of Actium. It was out of this question that CLEOPATRA UNCONQUERED (Savant 2015), the first of four books documenting her imagined new world, came to be.
