As a publisher, I have increasingly concern over the ability of the newer generations to actually read a novel or book. I teach at University and see the same there though it presents more like the ability to think (write/read and speak/listen) critically. There's no denying that shorter "flash" fiction works by authors are becoming increasingly popular with readers; in a similar manner, comic books and short audio-video animations are becoming increasingly popular with younger folks. Perhaps the 3-D application that will open this up will be a 3-D laser holograph that projects into the air a small audio-video animation?

Just a quick "heads up:" We're approaching the 30-minute remaining mark, so this is a good time to post any remaining excerpts.

Dear Dan,  well I can share with you that one of book store owners looked at a POD printer for his store, $ 80,000.00!
His wife quickly told him that was too expensive with a very long ROI time frame. The 3 D printing I know about is starting to be used in say oil fields so they can rapidly amke replacement parts, etc. They are also in use to make cheap plastic toys in small runs.

The book project I am starting I hope to do with my local chiropractor who knows a lot of biochemistry and teaches a lot of stretching exercises so you can self correct your posture and other spine issues. There are many technical books coming out about epigenetics but I would like to do something simpler so that people could live better and understand how much their thoughts, attitudes, and actions are impacted by what they eat, do, read, see, hear, smell, etc. As you know, the estimate is that about 90 % of chronic illness is caused by stress and how modern people respond to it in the wrong way.

Three, yes in the past year , people have learned that all news is a form of fakery. In my family this was easy to spot as each time my Dad would tell  a story it got more confabulated. When I would question him about it, his excuse was that it was oral history and that we would remember it better the more exciting he told it.

THE TURTLE DANCES by Daniel S. Janik - Excerpt #3 (Family Rated)

"Chapter 13 - The Turtle Dances

"You know what?" The young man offered, thinking of the two turtles they'd been watching. “We danced so well together, I think we might just win!"
"You know, I think so, too,“ replied his partner. “Thanks to our turtle-friends out there," the two finished together.
The couple returned, hand-in-hand, to the dance floor to join the line of competitors. Waiting for the judges to announce the awards, the young man turned to his now self-assured partner, touched the tip of her hand softly much the way the turtles had, and smiled. "The turtle dances," he said softly.
"Yes," she replied, while unseen in the distance, Isla and Surf happily executed a perfect bounce, twirl and slide. "The turtle dances!"

-----

Continuing the unique tradition of "talking up" rather than down to young readers, THE TURTLE DANCES demonstrates the power and beauty of narrative storytelling at its finest. Designed to re-awaken curiosity, discovery in both children and adults, the book is an excellent way to introduce literacy and associated lifelong learning pleasures.

Mulit-award-winning author, naturalist, artist, photographer and movie producer Daniel S. Janik resides in Honolulu, Hawaii with his wife and dance partner, Setsuko Tsuchiya. Together they welcome Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles to Hawaii throughout the year. An Oklahoma painter known for her vivid, almost photographic renditions of nature, illustrator Ruth R. Janik created the 28 naturalistic line drawings in the book specifically for children to color.

THE TURTLE DANCES is the third in the Savant "Color-Me-Please" series and the third in the author's "Pacific Rim Naturalist" group of children's books.

I have also noted that not only is thinking critically not being taught neither is a phrase I grew up with: " Consider the source".
The internet allows almost everybody to look like they know what they are talking about. I can everybody mad at me when I say that academia taught me to lie with statistics and get answers the people who funded my grant wanted to hear. However, I learned from peer review that sometimes my conclusions were wrong and that I could actually be wrong i how I looked at data. This was humbling but very useful in the long run.

It's been a most interesting chat this month, replete with anecdotes, facts, information and, I hope, a lot of wisdom as well. I can't think of an industry I would rather be in than publishing, editing, proofing and authoring. I love the lifelong challenges that authoring presents. I love that there's always something new or better that I can do as a publisher, editor, proofreader and/or author. That old saying that the only thing in life that doesn't change is change itself, is probably more apropos today than ever before.

I would like to invite anyone reading this chat to visit me when they're on Oahu at the Savant Bookstore Honolulu (http://www.savantbookstorehonolulu.com), or call and chat with me at 808-941-3927 any weekday from 9 a.m. to noon Hawaii Standard Time.

And, yes, I heard there was an earthquake on Big Island yesterday. I didn't notice it but others did.
