Yes, I said "rainy;" can you believe it?  It's been an odd summer with a lot more rain than usual, not that we haven't needed it!  And usually, the mornings, before the sunrises over Diamond Head, we're cuddled up beneath the light blanket of clouds that the Koolau Mountains catch. I'll bet once the sun rises, the light rain will lift and we'll resume our "normal" sunny Memorial Day Weekend at the beach at Waikiki.

So, I look forward to another Savant Online Realtime Open Chat, with the emphasis on "open" -- that is, everyone Savant and otherwise are invited to participate in our chat about what's new, what's just released, and what's cooking here at Savant Books and Publications.

Though the sun hasn't peeked up from over Diamond Head yet, it's already light enough to see Waikiki and the beach from the office, and it's looking like a great day (is there anything other in Hawaii?).

I just posted to our publisher blog about Savant finally entering the next stage in its evolution, one I've been awaiting for over a year now. Savant now consists of three entities: Savant Books and Publications, Savant Bookstore Honolulu and Savant Distribution, all innovative in design and poised for success in the next decade. I'd like to take a moment of our chat to explain why I think this so important a step.

As you may know, the publishing industry is involved in a crisis of unparallelled proportions. Never since Gutenburg has the entire industry faced both a combined social, technological and economic challenge as it is facing right now. Publishers are struggling not just with a downturn in literacy and interest in reading, the "eBook" revolution, and a persistent global depression involving humanistic endeavors, but their combined effects. Traditional publishing, distribution and point-of-sales are all reaching criticality, forcing many to go deeply into debt. I'm pleased to say that Savant, while also suffering from these forces and effects, is neither in debt nor having to "pull back" but is rather moving forward positioning itself for the future. As the crisis deepens, opportunities will present, and Savant, in my opinion, will be ready to lead the way in innovative publishing, distribution and sales. How? Because of the three entities mentioned above.

One way these forces have impacted us is in book output and sales. We've temporarily dropped our goal of two new books a month to one, and falling sales, especially in the eBook sector, have prompted us to look carefully at anything and everything that costs money. The good news is that Savant is structured for success in dire or generous times.

One of the biggest shifts I've seen in publishing involves trust. Public trust in publishers has fallen drastically, making publisher advertising and marketing difficult. Luckily, public trust in authors, despite the explosion of poorly edited and produced works, hasn't, however. Hence, it is all the more important these days that professional authors hone and apply their publicity and marketing skills. This will become even more important in the near future. This is one of the reasons for this chat. The other side is a major erosion in individual professional ethics. It's not, in my opinion, that folks are "getting badder" -- though that is a highly discussed theme these days -- but that "business" is becoming increasingly aggressive and the reasons for having a business seem to be disappearing in the foray. The reason for a business, in the grand scheme, isn't to "make money." It's to help our collective humanity, and one area we desperately need help in these days is literacy. The kind that spurs curiosity, innovation and humanism.

Well, I hope this sets a bit of tenor for our chat today. I look forward to hearing from everyone about their adventures in the authoring world.

It's hard to believe its 6 a.m. in Honolulu - it's black as midnight out the window, misted and raining intermittently. In the East near the tail of the dragon (it's head is Diamond Head, it's back is the ridge from DH to the Koolau Mountains) there's the faintest dark blue.

Today's Anoop Chandola's day, as his new historical novel, IN THE HIMALAYAN NIGHTS (Savant 2012) was released and featured at the Savant Bookstore Honolulu. It generated considerable interest, as did Scott Mastro's new book of short stories, BLOOD MONEY (Savant 2012) and William E. Sharp Jr.'s non-fiction work, RANDOM VIEWS OF ASIA FROM THE MID-PACIFIC (Savant 2012), all released in the last 4 months!  As you can see, it's a busy time here at Savant Central.

It's so early that it's still pitch black outside and, believe it or not, it's RAINING, here in Honolulu. Well, drizzling would be more descriptive. Actually, it's the last of the night rain, which we get almost every night, in the center or mountainous area of the island. I'm looking out our picture window at Waikiki and the Beach at Waikiki. I'll let you know the water conditions as soon as the sun decides to make it's grand appearance.

Welcome to another Savant Books and Publications Online Realtime Chat. This is an "open" chat - open to the public and our readers. Authors, editors, cover artists and staff meet talk about what's about to be released, what's in the hopper, and what we'd like to see in the future. It's a chance to take a break and meet the people that make authoring happen.

Despite what people are inclined to say about the demise of literacy in general and books in particular, despite the closure of some of the biggest chain bookstores and publishers, publishing, authoring, writing and the book are probably in better shape than ever before. I recall, some 20 years ago, when to write meant using a typewriter, finding an agent, making copies of a completed manuscript and mailing them at great expense to the couple hundred publishers who literally controlled the publishing industry, hoping one would see the merits of a work, and living hand-to-mouth for interminable periods between publications. Nowadays, one writes on a computer, doesn't need an agent, can send hundreds of copies as an attachment to literally thousands of publishers representing the widest panoply of genre's and topic interests ever. With the advent of Print on Demand (POD) and eBooks, the investment in a work has plummeted, allowing an unprecedented number of new authors to debut.

One thing hasn't much changed: - the living hand-to-mouth between publications. We do our best at Savant to address this residual problem by issuing author contracts at the highest author royalty rates possible, and by opening every possible marketing and sales channel for a work.

The biggest challenge to publishers and authors today is establishing author name and title recognition. Advertising is at an all-time high, and people, in general, are grossly over-saturated with "news" everywhere they turn. In return, an author's (verses a writer's) job has subtly changed from that of creative writer to include self-publicist.

The other side of the publishing industry is that of confusion in adjusting to all the new technological innovations that are impacting publication, and "reader daze" at the plethora of new works available to read in paper or e-form. 

There's no denying publishing is a different, rapidly evolving animal these days. But it's also the best of times for new writers and authors, if they have the courage to jump in and struggle with the new technologies and requirements of authorship. And it's also the best of times for readers with the amazing range and quantity of new works coming out every day.
